Skittles

I have found a great solution for many issues that occur in my classroom...SKITTLES!

Who would have thought that something so tiny could make such a huge difference. I use skittles for everything!  Here's my list...

1. Messy Tables- The kids tables and toolboxes in my classroom were a disaster! Once a day or once every other day I will yell  "freeze!" The kids will stop what they are doing and I will go around and check the tables. The group with the cleanest table and toolbox get a skittle...1 tiny skittle :) I haven't had messy tables in weeks! I hear the kids telling their friends to clean up because "we might get a skittle."

2. Writer's Workshop- Sometimes kids can get super chatty during writer's workshop. The solution...I call out the quietest table, praise them and give them a skittle. I don't have to worry about noisy tables after that!

3. Guided Reading- My kiddos were not having the greatest attitudes about leaving literacy work stations to come to guided reading (which is the whole reason for lit stations...more on that later). Anyway, I started doling out skittles to my kids if they put forth great effort and had a great attitude during guided reading. I haven't had any issues since!

4. Anything else that pops into my head :)

This super tiny, super inexpensive, mostly allergy free treat has made a HUGE difference in my kids attitudes and behavior.

What do you use to "shape" behavior in your classroom?

Ok... my problems with Skittles is I would eat them ALL! Love 'em!

I use Smarties (I open the package and give them one)... peanuts are also loved (by me too).

During Writer's Workshop I pull a name stick out and slide it in my pocket. I keep it a secret until the workshop ends then reveal it. If they were on task... a Jolly Rancher!

Love it! Gummy bears could be yummy too... at least for the teacher! :)

Put them on your wish list at the beginning of school! We have a Skittle Jar and if you are called to go to the Skittle Jar for what ever random wonderful reason, you get a squirt of hand sanitizer and take on off the top...train 'em the first couple of days and they will do ANYTHING for a Skittle!!! Bummed this year because 2 of my kids have dental work that keeps them from Skittles...My favorite part is Skittles are not my favorite so it's the one thing I won't eat all of!!! :)

Those are cute ideas...I've used chewy lemonheads and I have them in a gumball dispenser I found at a garage sale. When I spot someone doing what they are supposed to or working quietly, I come around with the the dispenser and they get one. I think this has lost it's flare a little...may have to try skittles to mix it up a bit :)

One skittle for working hard during guided reading has turned my most reluctant reader into the student who is constantly asking to read to me!!! Works like a charm!! Thanks Stephanie!

I do door prizes throughout the day. I have a basket that has each student's name on a stick. If I draw that student's name, they get a prize. However, to get the prize the student's behavior chart color must be green. My prizes are small, a sticker or eraser, but they love it. This time of year when I am cleaning out drawers and cabinets I will give away old folders, flashcard sets or whatever I find that I want to get rid of. They are in heaven!
